Arisen from the Rubble: Tourism in Beautiful Langtang

Langtang region lies on the north of the Kathmandu valley. It is bounded up by the Langtang National Park, which is a closely located National Park from the valley consisting some of the pleasant trekking destinations, including peaks for climbing, flora and fauna, Lakes and Himalayas and the ethnic villages.

In April 25 2015, Nepal experienced the huge and devastating earthquake of 7.8 magnitudes. It repeated with a lesser stroke in May 12. In total, they took more than 8000 human lives according to the governmental record. Thousands of people are still missing. Langtang region was one of the regions that were highly affected. Houses collapsed, people died, landslides came. People saw that Langtang was gone…totally gone. Tourism was major profession on the Langtang and the scenarios became horrific. Then the news of dying and missing came. Langtang valley was totally swept away by the snow landslides. The whole region turned into rubble…no productive at all.

At the higher altitude, almost the houses were made from stone and mud that were totally traditional houses. So, they had a great destruction. Many villages totally migrated temporarily. Because, the aftershocks were continuing several time every day. The upper section of the Langtang region became human less. Tourism in the whole country fell down rapidly and Langtang region could not be the exceptional one as it was one of the largely affected regions. It looked like Langtang region will never raise again.

With a specific planning, government in co-ordination with tourism related institutions went on Langtang to survey the possibilities of promoting tourism. It was done at all the affected regions. The survey team found that there should be so many things to be re-established to revive the tourism in Langtang. Hotels and restaurants should be rebuilt; trails should be blockage free and many more. So, it took long time to revive the Langtang region tourism business. Trekkers from different parts of the world were just looking its revival and now it has been done. Langtang region was declared safe for the trekking and facilities were re-established. Now, Langtang region has arisen from the rubble, from destruction to hopefulness, collapse to rebuild.

With the re-establishment of the basic things for trekking, trekkers have already started to explore Langtang region. It has got basically three destinations: the Langtang valley, Gosaikunda Lake and the Helambu valley. Tamang Heritage trail is another popular trail on the side of the Langtang. Now, mountains are there, green hills are there, ethnic settlements are there and the surrounding beauties are there.

Things to see/do in the Langtang region

Langtang region is the border region of Nepal with Tibet. It is surrounded by the snowy peaks. Mt. Langtang Lirung (7246m), Dorje Lakpa range (6988m), Loenpo Gang (6979m), Langshisha Ri (6427m), Gosaikunda Peak, Yala Peak (5520m) and many peaks are located there. Some peaks are also popular for the climbing.

Due to the abundant attractions, Langtang region is primarily popular for trekking even after the earthquake of 2015. Except Helambu trekking, the entire trek begins from Syabrubesi. Following the Langtang Khola, it heads upward to the Langtang valley. Although Gosaikunda trek begins from Dhunche, the trek is combined with the Langtang valley trek. Passing the beautiful rhododendron forest, trekkers reach to the outstanding Tamang ethnic villages. Gosaikunda is another tourist destination. The Gosaikunda Lake is popular here. It is religiously connected with the era of Lord Shiva. So, it is a sacred pilgrimage destination of Hindus and Buddhists. The Lake is surrounded by many other Lakes on the surrounding. Lauribina pass is the highest altitude that trekkers cross over. Helambu valley is another wonderful destination. It is populated by Tamang and Sherpa groups.

Besides exploring the natural wonders, another thing is to explore the ethnic communities. Tamang people populate the whole region, who is one of the ethnic groups in Nepal. They are hospitable and friendly people. Though earthquake did a big damage in the entire Langtang region, it could not damage the culture and traditions of the local people. They are spiritually loaded, which couldn’t be destroyed. Their cultural pattern, unique garments, Tibetan Buddhist culture and welcoming hearts could not be destroyed.

If you go to trek in the Langtang region, you will be busy in listening the stories of the people’s experiences. Slowly, the horrific situation is going to be a history in Langtang. The smiles in the face of people have re-emerged.

Langtang region has the same attractions of flora and fauna as it was before the earthquake. Langtang National Park was established in 1976 to preserve the biological diversities. The national park covers 1710 sq. km. rhododendron forest basically dominates the whole region. There are several plant species in it. Sal, Chirpine, oak, birch, fir, Juniper and other trees are some of them. In fauna species, musk deer, Himalayan thar, red panda, Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, wild dog, ghoral, serow and more than 250 species of birds are found.

So, Langtang region has already revived its unique and traditional features from the destroyed rubbles. Again, it has regained its popularity of one of the famous trekking regions in Nepal.
