Upper Dolpo Trekking

Having breakfast at the hotel, set out for the Kathmandu sightseeing. Kathmandu has got centuries-old temples, monasteries and stupas. Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath temple, Boudhanath stupa, and Swayambhunath stupa. They are prime attractions in Kathmandu and are included in the UNESCO-listed world heritage sites. After the tour, get back to the hotel and prepare for the upcoming trip. Maybe you still need to buy something? Overnight at the hotel.

After breakfast, we transfer you to the domestic airport for the flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. It is a town, located close to the Indian border. It's a tropical region and remains ofter very hot. After a 50 minutes flight, transfer to the hotel. You may explore the local market. Overnight at the hotel. 

Nepalgunj to Juphal is a 35 minutes flight. A tiny airstrip of Juphal welcome you and the journey embarks. The trail is easy and fine. First, you hike down for about an hour and follow Thuli Bheri River continually to Dunai for a couple of hours. Welcome to the district center of Dolpo- Dunai. It is quite equipped with basic facilities like school, police office, government offices, and others.  Overnight at the guest house.

Starting the trek from Dunai after having breakfast, we follow the ancient route, and check-in at the check-post, where we submit our trekking documents and permits that are required for the controlled area trekking. Shey Phoksundo National Park permit is also mandatorily present at the check-post. The trail follows the Phoksundo River bank and the geographical landscape view goes on changing. We cross a  bridge after Shangta and reach the juncture of Phoksundo and Maiba Khola. Walking north, we reach Cheppka. Overnight at the guest house.

Heading from Chhepka, we follow the renowned route of Lower Dolpo Trek, cross the river a couple of times and reach Rechi for the lunch stop. The altitude reached around 3000 meters by this point. After the lunch break, we commence the trek and reach the juncture of Sulighad, cross the River and Yulung stream and stretch the journey to Amchi Hospital. This hospital often treats local people with herbs. Overnight at the tented camp. 

From Amchi Hospital, we begin the trek having breakfast ascending through the woods, and reach a winter settlement of Dolpo, which is known as Palam. People move to this place from the Ringmo village when they feel it is too cold to stay there during winter. This brings the nomadic sense to the trek.  Then our descending and ascending schedule proceed and from the ridge, the first glimpse of the Phoksundo Lake can be taken. Even the scenery of Ringmo village looks dazzling, which truly represents the typical scenery of Dolpo. Reaching Phoksundo Lake, we take ra est. Overnight at the tented camp.

A full-day exploration around the Lake enriched the memory of torque Lake, photography and exploration around the Ringmo village can not be described in words. The calm Lake stands with purity, which is untouched and holds its beauty with the blue image. People swim, fish, and enjoy time walking around the shore. The Ringmo village offers an ancient image of the unique and outstanding attractions of the monastery, chhortens, and mani walls. Overnight at the tented camp.

The epic journey begins from Phoksundo Lake through the cliff above the Lake. the journey gives an impression of Eric Valley's world-renowned movie- Himalayan Caravan. Climbing to the ridge, we hike down through the woods and reach Phoksundo Khola Camp. From there, we climb up to the destination today, which is called Sallaghari. Overnight at the tented camp.

We commence today's journey from Sallaghari climbing through the narrow trail of the River. We cross the River a couple of times and walk through the wide valley. Heading further, we reach the Nagda La Base Camp in a couple of hours and take a rest. It's great to stay at this place and acclimatize before crossing a pass, which is over 5000 meters. Overnight at the tented camp.

Waking up at the Nagdala High Camp, we prepare for a big trip with the Nagda La Pass, which is located at 5350 meters altitude. A three-hour journey finally allows you to take a gasp and celebrate the achievement. The gigantic view of the surrounding landscape along with the Himalayas like Shey Shikhar, Kang Chunne, and the Tibetan peaks blows your mind away. The next destination of today's trek is Shey Gompa, which is one of the most renowned destinations in Upper Dolpo. Overnight at the tented camp.

After breakfast, we explore the 800 years old monastery- known as Shey Gompa. It is locally known as Shelri Sumdho Gompa and is popular among the trekkers, who explore Upper Dolpo. Every year, Shey Festival is held at this point.

After exploring Shey Gompa, we head following a stream for a couple of hours. We gradually climb to the Shey La, which is accessible in two hours. This time, the Kanjirowa Peak can be seen clearly along with the view of the Mustang and the Tibetan landscape. We hike down from the pass and reach Namgung in a couple of hours. Overnight at the tented camp.

Having breakfast, we explore the Namgung monastery, which is situated on a high cliff. It is a beautiful side of spiritual prosperity. Then we begin the trek following the Namga Khola. Crossing the stream, we walk through the meadow, which is a summer herding spot for the local people. Walking further, we encounter a beautiful Saldang village. People follow a traditional lifestyle, which is close to the Tibetan way. Overnight at the tented camp.

Due to the increasing altitude, we need to adapt to the high altitude to avoid mountain sickness. After breakfast, we proceed for a day hike towards the Yangjer monastery, located at 4590 meters altitude. We bring our packed lunch, which allows us enough time to see around and explore cultural history. Then be back to our camp. Overnight at the tented camp.

After an amazing day at Saldang, we begin today's excursion following the Raphya Khola. First, we climb to the ridge and gradually trek down to Komash village, which is highly influenced by the Tibetan way of living and cultural aspects. Overnight at the tented camp.

From Komash village, we begin the journey, exploring the wildlife scenery and we may get some sights of rarely found fauna like blue sheep and leopards that live in the high altitude terrain. The landscape looks like Tibetan terrain as it is quite deserted. We can see some parts filled with alpine vegetation. Through the easy walking route, we reach Shimen after about five hours. Overnight at the tented camp.

Heading from Shimen, we catch the route following the Panjyang Khola. Along the route, we pass some tiny but outstanding alpine settlements along with the eye-catching monasteries. It seems as if the Himalayan terrain is highly blessed. After 5 hour walk, we reach Tinje and take a rest. Overnight at the tented camp.

We begin the trek from Tinje village following the route along the Panjyang River and passing a tiny village, known as Chhamdang. Continuing the trek, we reach the juncture of two streams, cross the bridge, and head through the yak grazing meadow. We get sights of yak and sheep herding around the picturesque meadow. This is an appropriate place for camping too. Overnight at the tented camp.

Kick-off the journey from Yak Kharka after breakfast energizes the body. First, we cross a stream and climb up to a pass over 5000 meters, which is known as Choila North Pass. We do it gradually as it is not technically easy to do. After a couple of hours' walk, the enticing scenery of the Dolpo region comes in front of you. From the top, descend gradually to Tokyu. Overnight at the tented camp.

From Tokyo, we make a short hike today- a maximum of a couple of hours as the day includes a remarkable destination, known as Dho Tarap. Dho Tarap is a well decorated and beautiful village in Dolpo, which has got a wonderful cultivating land that gives fresh vegetables and grains. It is loaded with Tibetan Buddhist cultural attractions like monasteries that truly represent the Khampas of Tibet. These are Ribo Bumpa Monastery, Drakmar Dewa Monastery, Mekhyim Monastery, and Dhoro Monastery are the monasteries located around this beautiful village. Exploration of the cultural affluence and lifestyle offers you a new insight. Overnight at the tented camp.

Having breakfast at Dho Tarap, we embark on the excursion and reach the juncture of Tarap Khola and another stream known as Mirubabane. Crossing the River, we reach Langa Camo. Heading further, we get astonishing scenery around and continue walking Gyamghar and Toltol. We stretch the journey up to Naworpani and take a rest. Overnight at tented camp.

From Naworpani, we head along the Tarap Khola. We are gradually heading downhill so the altitude gets down, which makes our trek relatively easy. Then we leave the stream and climb to Lamachaur. Passing Laini Odar, we hike down to Chhedul Gompa, where we explore for a while and set our camp nearby Lashicap. Overnight at the tented camp.

Finally, we are re-connecting the route from where we have escaped. From Lashicap, we follow the Riverbed of Thuli Bheri via Tarakot. We cross the bridge and walk continually through some of the tiny settlements like Byasgadh. More greenery appears as we head downhill, especially the treeline. Following the main route, we continue the trek to the district center of Dolpo- Dunai. Overnight at the guesthouse.

Having breakfast at Dunai, we embark on following the Thuli Bheri River, reach Kalagawda, climb to the ridge and continue all the way to Juphal. Overnight at the guest house.

Early morning, we fly from Juphal airstrip to Nepalgunj, which is a half-an-hour flight. If we have an on-time flight,  we can re-connect the flight from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu and our representative transfers you to the hotel. After a huge and adventurous trek, it's time to get a massage, relax, shower and siesta. We sit together and have dinner, and share our feelings about the trip. Overnight at the hotel.
