    Upper Dolpo Trekking is an adventurous excursion in the Dolpo region, which is located beyond the modern touch somewhere in the remote far-western region of Nepal. The trek offers a remarkable memory filled with magical vistas, ancient Tibetan Buddhist villages, and centuries-old monasteries. During the trek to Upper Dolpo, you hike through the high-altitude terrain and cross multiple high passes that offer magnificent sceneries.     The usual itinerary of Upper Dolpo commences from the Juphal airport of Dolpo, which is accessible by the Himalayan flight taking off from Nepalgunj. However, the route has got variations, which can be also combined via Mugu. From Juphal, you trek to Dunai, which is a district center of Dolpo. It is also a commercial hub. Passing through the spectacular landscape and inner Dolpo valleys, it descends to the Dho Tarap valley, which is famous for the people to search the caterpillar fungus. As a clockwise circuit of the Upper Dolpo, the trek retraces to Dunai, and continually to Juphal, where it concludes.

    Upper Dolpo Trek is accessible throughout the year in terms of weather and climate, however, mid-winter will be highly technical due to the heavy snowfall. When monsoon blocks almost all the trekking routes of Nepal, the Upper Dolpo trekking route welcomes you as it lies in the Himalayan rain shadow area of Nepal.

    Best Season

    March, April, and May of Spring and September, October, and November are the best time to trek in the Upper Dolpo region. The weather often remains amazing and the views can be explored excellently. The snowless seasons are easy to cross the high passes of the Dolpo region. However, the monsoon is also a suitable time to explore Dolpo as it is located in the Himalayan Rain Shadow area.

    Difficulty

    No doubt, with several high passes crossing even 5000 meters, Upper Dolpo Trek has marked itself as an adventurous excursion in the remote part of Nepal Himalayas. Your physical fitness, acclimatization and motivation support you to accomplish the Upper Dolpo Trekking. So, before coming for the trek, please prepare yourself with some outdoor activities like cycling, running, and gym going schedule. You need to walk 6-7 hours every day through the high-altitude terrain.

    Accommodation and Meals

    Although Lower Dolpo Trekking can be done through a tea house, you need to do camping for the upper Dolpo trek. As there lack of proper amount of food, it's better to carry and buy the locally available food items and fresh vegetables. Despite these facts, there are some tea houses at some points. Camping accommodation should be properly managed with branded equipment to be safe from the wind. Shiva Excursion takes care of the equipment manager for food and accommodation once you book the trek.

    Permits & Regulations

    Upper Mustang Trekking permit costs 500 USD for 10 Days and 50 USD per day if it increases. On the other hand, you need a Shey Phoksundo National Park entry Permit, which costs about 10 USD. As it is a controlled region trekking, a limited number of trekkers are only allowed to enter this region every year. 

    High altitude Sickness in Upper Dolpo Trek?

    Upper Dolpo Trek is a high-altitude trek, so it's important to know about the high-altitude sickness. High altitude symptoms include headache, vomiting, loss of sleep, dizziness, dehydration, etc. In case you feel it, it's important to stop at the camp and have warm meals, soup, drink water and if you have medicine through a certified doctor, you can have it. But, at least, it's not good to ignore it.
